Rahul Gandhi nominated to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, whose status as Lok Sabha MP was reinstated few days back has been nominated to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence on Wednesday by Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi, there are three other Opposition MPs who have been nominated to Standing Committee. From Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Dr Amar Singh have been nominated to the Committee on Defence. Aam Aadmi Party MP Sushil Kumar Rinku has been nominated to the Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing.

The NCP leader and MP from Lakshadweep Faizal PP Mohammed was nominated for the Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Faizal was also disqualified as MP before his Lok Sabha membership was restored in March 2023.

According to the Lok Sabha bulletin a total of four Opposition MPs were nominated, two from the Congress and one each from NCP and AAP to different Parliamentary committees.

Members of the Standing Committee review yearly reports and grant requests, as well as examine Bills referred to them by the appropriate House. These Committees do not address the day-to-day administrative matters of related Ministries.

With the emphasis of their functioning to concentrate on long-term plans, policies and the philosophies guiding the working of the Executive, these Committees are in a very privileged position to provide necessary direction, guidance and inputs for broad policy formulations and in the achievement of the long-term national perspective by the Executive, as per the Lok Sabha documents.

A Gujarat court convicted Gandhi in the ‘Modi surname’ case, leading to his disqualification as a Lok Sabha member on March 24, and a two-year prison sentence. The Supreme Court’s stay on his conviction in the 2019 defamation case resulted in the restoration of his membership to the Lower House of Parliament on August 7. The former Congress president had been a part of the committee on Defence prior to his disqualification in March 2023.
