Pregnant woman dies of sunstroke after walking 7 km to reach hospital in Maharashtra’s Palghar

A pregnant Woman allegedly died of heatstroke after walking for over seven kilometres to reach a hospital in a village in Palghar district of Maharashtra, report said on Monday.

According to reports, on Friday, a 21-year-old pregnant tribal woman, identified as Sonali Waghat, had to walk nearly four kilometres from her home in Osar Veera village in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district to reach a nearby highway where she boarded an autorickshaw to the Tawa Public Health Centre (PHC).

A senior health official said the Sonali, who was nine months pregnant, underwent a regular checkup at the PHC and was discharged. However, she had to walk another 3.5 km under the scorching sun to reach home from the highway and later in the evening developed health complications due to walking in the sweltering heat.

Palghar district civil surgeon Dr Sanjay Bodade said the Pregnant Woman was taken to the Dhundalwadi PHC, from where she was referred to the Kasa sub-divisional hospital (SDH) where doctors found her to be in a “semi-comorbid condition”.

The woman was running high temperature and was referred to a specialty hospital at Dhundalwadi in Dahanu for further treatment, however, the woman died enroute and also lost the baby.

Dr Bodade said the woman was not in labour and was given proper medical attention at the Kasa SDH but they were ill-equipped to treat her there due to her being in a “semi-comorbid condition” and referred her to a specialty hospital.

The senior doctor said the woman’s condition had been aggravated due to walking in the scorching weather which caused a sunstroke and eventual death, adding that he personally visited the PHCs and the SDH to probe the incident and found no evidence of negligence on part of the staff or doctors.

Talking to news agency PTI Palghar Zilla Parishad president Prakash Nikam said that the woman was anemic and had been brought to the Kasa SDH by an ASHA worker where she was treated by the doctors present there.

Nikam said that Kasa SDH lacks an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and specialist doctors to treat such patients in conditions of emergency, adding that the lack of facilities led to the tribal woman’s death.
