Tamil actor-director Manobala passes away at 69, Rajnikanth and other South stars pay tribute

Renowned Tamil actor, director, and producer Manobala breathed his last today, May 3, at his Chennai residence. Reports state that the actor was hospitalized 10 days ago and was undergoing treatment for liver-related diseases. He was 69.

Reportedly, the veteran actor’s health deteriorated after he underwent angio-treatment in January after experiencing chest pain.

Manobala, who has acted in over 200 films, directed around 40 films, and produced a few films as well, was most popular for his comic roles.

Manobala’s demise has shocked the Tamil Film Industry. Superstar Rajnikanth and other celebs paid a heartfelt tribute to the actor.

Rajnikanth took to Twitter and expressed his condolences. He said he is saddened by the death of the popular director, actor, and his friend Manobala. He offered his condolences to his family and prayed for his soul.

Actor Gautham Karthik also tweeted, Heartbreaking to hear that director/actor Manobala sir is no longer with us. He said it was a true pleasure to work with him! You will be surely missed! Condolences to family, friends and loved ones, he added.

Legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, with whom Manobala got his start, said, his student Manobala’s death is an irreparable loss for him and the Tamil film industry.

Producer G Dhananjayan also took to Twitter and wrote that he was shocked to learn about Manobala’s death. He tweeted, Shocking and it’s unbelievable such a sweet person and a good friend Manobala sir passed away. Heartfelt condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace.

Born on December 8, 1953, Manobala started his career in Tamil cinema in the early 1970s and with Kamal Haasan’s reference became assistant director with Bharathiraja for his 1979 film Puthiya Vaarpugal.

Manobala made his directorial debut with the 1982 film Agaya Gangai. He also directed the Bollywood film, Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai, starring Jeetendra. Some of his other directorial films include Pillai Nila, Nandhini, and Malluvetti Minor among others. His last directorial project was the 2002 Tamil film Naina.

Manobala was last seen in Kajal Aggarwal’s film Ghosty.
