AR Rahman’s live concert stopped by Pune police midway, here’s why

Maharashtra Police on Sunday stopped the live concert of Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman in Pune. The show was halted midway by the Pune Police as the singer-music composer exceeded the 10 pm deadline.

The video of the same has gone viral on social media where Pune police walked onto the stage and asked him to stop the show at around 10:14 pm citing the court-mandated deadline.

Reportedly, AR Rahman was performing his last track, Chaiyya Chaiyya, when he was stopped by the cops. The authorities reminded the organizers about the 10 pm deadline set by the Supreme Court to prevent noise pollution.

Pune Police issued a clarification on the same on Monday on Twitter and tweeted Pune Police stopped music maestro AR Rahman from singing during his concert last night after he continued to perform beyond the permissible time of 10 pm.

Smartana Patil, DCP Zone 2 of Pune Police, said, Rahman was singing his last song, and while singing he did not realize that it was already past 10 pm, so our police official who was at the venue went and conveyed to him the deadline to be followed as per the SC guidelines after that he stopped singing.

The concert happened at the Raja Bahadur Mill area in Pune between 8 pm and 10 pm. Reportedly, the singer was also asked the reason for singing the show beyond the court-mandated time of 10 pm. Soon after that, AR Rahman left the stage.

This didn’t go well down with Rahman’s fans. One of his fans tweeted, Extremely disappointing of Pune Police to shut down AR Rahman’s concert in Pune at 10:14 pm. While the rule of 10 pm cutoff is understood, this isn’t how a visiting artist of his stature should have been treated. He was almost on his finale song when this happened, he added.

Another tweeted, Quite an awesome AR Rahman concert in Pune. Sadly cut short abruptly by the cops for running overtime. But AR Rahman singing Muqabla & Tu Hi Re live, a slightly different rendition of Dil Se Re, and crowd favourite Mustafa all made it worth it.
