US Senate resolution says Arunachal Pradesh integral part of India, recognizes McMahon line

A resolution passed by the United States Senate termed Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India and recognized the McMahon Line as the international boundary between China and the Northeastern Indian state.

US Senator Bill Hagerty along with Senator Jeff Merkley introduced the resolution in the American Senate highlighting the critical need for the United States to “stand shoulder-to-shoulder” with its strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region, especially India, to counter “grave threats” to a free and open Indo-Pacific from China.

Senator Hagerty said the bipartisan resolution expresses the US Senate’s unequivocal support for recognizing Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India and condemning China’s military aggression to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control.

The resolution also called for further enhancing the US-India strategic partnership and the Quad in support of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, Hagerty said.

The US Senate’s resolution comes in the backdrop of a huge clash between Indian and Chinese forces—the biggest clash in past six years—in the Eastern Sector along the Line of Actual Control. It reaffirms the United States recognizing the McMahon Line as the international boundary between China and India’s Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking on the resolution, Senator Merkley said America must push back against China “alternative vision” which opposes American values supporting freedom and rules-based order, adding that these must be at the center of all of America’s actions and relationships around the world.

He said the resolution makes clear that the United States views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of the Republic of India—not the People’s Republic of China—”and commits the US to deepening support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded international partners and donors.”

The bipartisan Senators’ resolution condemns additional China’s provocations, its use of military force to change the status quo along the LaC, construction of villages in contested areas, publication of maps with Mandarin-language names for cities and features in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and expansion of PRC territorial claims in Bhutan.

China has repeatedly laid claim that Arunachal Pradesh is their territory, however, the claim has almost every time been shot down at by other permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and other nations.
