A Metro Pillar in Karnataka’s Bengaluru that was under construction collapsed on Tuesday killing a woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old son. The incident is reported from the Nagavara area when the metro pillar fell on their two-wheeler.

According to the reports, Lohit Kumar, his wife Tejasvini and their twin children- a daughter and a son, were on a bike when the iron pillar, 40 feet long, fell on them. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital by the passerby.

Anjum Parvez, MD, BMRCL, announces Rs 20 lakh as ex-gratia to the kin of the victims. He further said a detailed probe will be done into this matter, and steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Bengaluru East DCP Dr Bheemashankar S Guled said the 25-year-old Tejasvini and her son Vihaan suffered grievous injuries. However, they were immediately shifted to the Altius Hospital where they succumbed to injuries during the treatment. The father and the daughter are being treated at the hospital.

Guled said the couple along with their twins were heading toward Hebbal. The metro pillar was overloaded and collapsed on the bike. The mother and son were pillion riders, adding both of them were wearing helmets. He said FSL and other experts have been called to the incident site.

According to an eyewitness, the portion that fell had been shaking for a few days prior to the incident, but no action was taken. Locals and commuters in the area also staged a protest against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

A few days ago, a 37-year-old lady ragpicker was killed in a similar incident when a heavy iron metal plate attached to a Mumbai Metro pillar crashed on her near the Viviana Mall in Thane.
