Punjab Police lathicharge on farmers protesting outside Bhagwant Mann’s residence

The Punjab Police on Wednesday lathi-charged farmers protesting outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Sangrur.

Reports said farmers organised the protest and demanded an increase in minimum daily wages to Rs 700 under the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005. The farmers also demanded the implementation of five-marla plot schemes for Dalits and allotment of the third part of common panchayat land on lease to Dalits.

The video of the Sangrur Police lathi charging farmers is doing rounds on the internet. Following the protest, Sangrur superintendent of police Manpreet Singh was spotted hitting the farmers in the video. He was also seen ordering other cops to lathi charge in the video.

Reports further said eight other labour unions have joined the Sanjha Mazdoor Morcha in organising the protest that started near the Patiala-Bathinda road.

Zameen Prapti Sangharsh Committee president Mukesh Malaud said the protest was followed after CM Bhagwant Mann refused to meet them after scheduling the meeting.

Reports said the farmers also demanded compensation for the death of their cattle due to lumpy skin disease, the release of reimbursement for their damaged crops, and the cancellation of FIRs for burning crop residue.
