Indian Constitution is undergoing constant changes to reflect contemporary social realities: CJI Chandrachud

The Constitution of India is constantly changing to reflect the Contemporary Social Realities, said Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday.

CJI Chandrachud was addressing an event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on the eve of Constitution Day of India also celebrated as Samvidhan Diwas. The CJI said it was a significant day because, on this very day, the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly, adding that the process of nation-building was a task that was constantly evolving.

He further said the fundamental values of the Constitution, such as dignity and a sense of fraternity, were defined in a dialogue that frequently took place in the courts between judges and lawyers. He continued by saying that both the Bar and the Bench were equally important participants in the court’s proceedings.

No case is too big or too small for the judges since, in the end, all cases, big or small, were subject to the same legal rules, he said. The CJI added that everyone has access to the Constitution’s text, and even judges have their own interpretations of it. Additionally, there have been interactions between citizens and the Constitution.

He asserted that judges’ responsibility as administrators was to swiftly resolve cases.
CJI Chandrachud stated that he was making efforts to make sure that errors were reported to the attorneys on the same day. I thought every Supreme Court judge brings with him a wealth of experience as a lawyer, a district judge, and a Chief Justice of High Courts, he said.

The CJI added that the effectiveness of the judges affects the public’s belief in the legal system. Regardless of how long it took, the one thing citizens care about is if their case is heard by the court or not.

Constitution Day is observed every year on November 26. It aims to mark the day the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.
