Chennai Police detain AIADMK chief Edapaddi Palaniswami during hunger strike

The Chennai Police today detained All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) for holding a Hunger Strike at Valluvar Kottam in the city. Police claimed that they did not have permission for the strike.

AIADMK general secretary EPS and his supporters were holding the hunger strike over being evicted from the state assembly on Tuesday. They were also demanding RB Udaykumar as Deputy Opposition Leader of the state assembly.

An AIADMK leader said that this was a murder of democracy and they had only wanted to do a peaceful protest. They wanted to do a hunger strike, but that was not permitted and they have so many mistakes on their part and were still continuing these kinds of atrocities.

Another leader said that they were being taken to Rajaratnam stadium. The government was getting into totally unlawful activity.

Earlier, EPS claimed that the AIADMK had sent a letter to the speaker stating that OPS had been dismissed as the deputy opposition leader and that RB Udayakumar had replaced him. The speaker had not compiled with the majority AIADMK’s order and he was acting based on the suggestions of the ruling DMK.

Tamil Nadu assembly speaker M. Appavu ordered eviction of opposition leader EPS and other AIADMK MLAs after the ruckus in connection with a committee report of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s death.

Arumugaswamy commission accused AIADMK Cordinator O Pannerselvam in its report. It said that he was all along an insider and formally a part of the inner circle and whatever transpired was within his knowledge, even during the lifetime of the late Chief Minister. He succeeded to the office of the CM without any loss of time as though he was in a statement of readiness to fit in. He positioned himself as the successor of the late Chief Minister which was not a fortuitous happening.
