Karnataka: School principal heckled by right-wing outfit for essay competition on Prophet Muhammed, investigation underway

An inquiry has been ordered by Karnataka Education Department after the principal of a government school in the Gadag district was allegedly heckled by a right-wing outfit, Sri Rama Sene over an essay competition on Prophet Muhammed.

Reports say Sri Rama Sene activists barged into school premises after the headmaster of the school organised an essay competition on Prophet. The incident took place in a government school in Nagavi Taluk on Tuesday night.

School principal Abdul Munaf Saheb Bijapur distributed free books about Prophet Muhammed titled Mohammed(s) Yelarigagi to the students and also announced prize money of Rs 5,000 for students to do well in the essay competition, the reports further stated.

Abdul Munaf said someone known came to him and offered sponsor money for the essay competition. He informed that the competition was organised to improve the handwriting of students and he was not promoting Islam, reports said.

The headmaster further said the school organises at least one or two events every month and have had also held essay competitions on Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa, and other personalities too.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sri Rama Sene activists alleged that the headmaster was trying to convert the students to Islam. They also alleged that students were forced to study Muhammed when it is not even part of academics.

A Sri Rama Sene activist said as a teacher, the headmaster should not allow the promotion of any one religion and he is putting other communities in a bad light by only promoting Islam. GM Basavalingappa, the deputy director of public instruction said there were no government circulars to conduct such competitions.

Following this, the State Education Department ordered an inquiry and also warned the headmaster and promised the activists to take strict action, reports said. As many as 43 students took part in the essay competition.
