Sourav Ganguly hoisted tricolour from Lord’s balcony? Here’s everything you need to know about former skipper’s iconic Lord’s moment

The BCCI President and former team India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who is known for his captaincy in the NatWest series at the Lords as well as other circuit tours, has a special connection with the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

Former Indian skipper on Tuesday evening arrived at Mitali Sangha community Durga Puja Pandal where a replica of Lord’s Pavilion was set up adjacent to the pandal for Ganguly by the Puja Committee. He inaugurated this Lords-like puja pandal following flag hoisting from the pandal balcony.

Of course, no one forgot the Lord’s iconic winning moment where the former cricketer took off his shirt and waved it on the Lord’s balcony. Now, this iconic Lord’s moment is the theme of a puja pandal in Kolkata.

Durga Puja aka Durgotsava is a yearly celebration that honours the Hindu goddess Durga and commemorates her victory over Mahishasur.

Every year, the unique Puja pandals themes have been introduced in Kolkata to celebrate the festival. This time, a pandal named Garia’s Navo Durga Puja pandal has been decorated on the theme of the historic Lord’s balcony, where Sourav Ganguly took off his shirt and waved it to celebrate India’s win in the NatWest tri-series final in 2002.

Lord’s is a venue where Sourav Ganguly witnessed arguably the best moment in his captaincy as India successfully chased down 326 runs against England Natwest tri-series 2002.

After winning the Natwest Trophy, Ganguly not only took off his T-shirt but also waved it for a long time from the Lord’s balcony.

Batting first in Natwest tri-series final, Nasser Hussain led England had made the most of the opportunities as centuries from opener Marcus Trescothick (109) and Hussain (115) powered them to a mammoth score of 325/5.

However, the Men in Blue were in no mood to go down without a fight as Ganguly (60) and Virender Sehwag (45) laid a solid foundation with a 106-run opening stand.

A defeat was looking closer after 146/5 in the 24th over of the game but it was 221 runs sixth-wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh (69) and Mohammad Kaif (87*) that led them to a historic win at Lords.
