Heavy rain in Kerala claims six lives, IMD issues red alert in 7 districts

As Heavy Rain continues to lash Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert in seven districts on Tuesday. The weather department has predicted thunderstorms and lighting in several parts of the state till August 5.

The districts that are under red Alert are Ernakulum, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Pathanamthitta. Amid heavy rainfall, some parts of the state declared a holiday for educational institutions.

IMD issued an orange alert in two districts—Malappuram and Thrissur. A yellow alert has also been issued for the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Palakkad.

When a red alert is issued, severe to extremely heavy rain is predicted, and authorities are urged to deal with any danger that could arise. An orange alert warns of very heavy rain, and authorities are asked to stay vigilant. A yellow alert means authorities are asked to remain updated about the current weather situation.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the joint emergency cell of the National Disaster Response Force and state forces have been formed and deployed in Idukki, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Wayanad districts.

Five Idukki dams — Ponmudi, Kundala, Kallarkutty, Erattayar, and Lower Periyar have hit the red alert storage levels, according to data given by Kerala State Electricity Board.

CM also added that disaster response teams from all police stations have been instructed to be prepared to handle the emergency situation.
