Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain arrested in money laundering case

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an alleged money laundering case on Monday.

Reports said Jain has been booked by the ED in connection with hawala transactions related to Kolkata-based companies. The health minister has been accused of receiving money from shell companies for cash transferred through hawala. For those who don’t know, hawala is a reference to the informal cash transfer system which is usually carried on for money laundering.

The case filed against him is connected to a money-laundering investigation launched for a 2017 corruption case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Satyendar Jain’s arrest comes after the ED attacked properties worth Rs 4.81 crore of the family and companies beneficially owned and controlled by the minister in connection with a money-laundering case in April.

“Investigation by the ED revealed that during the period 2015-16 when Satyendar Kumar Jain was a public servant, the above-mentioned companies beneficially owned and controlled by him received accommodation entries to the tune of ₹4.81 crores from shell companies against cash transferred to Kolkata-based entry operators through Hawala route. These amounts were utilized for direct purchase of land or for the repayment of loan taken for the purchase of agricultural land in and around Delhi,” the ED said in April.

More details are awaited….
