Yasin Malik: 10 arrested under UAPA after protests backing Kashmiri separatist leader in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar

A day after protests outside the residence of Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik over his sentencing by the special court, the Jammu and Kashmir police arrested ten people under stringent anti-terrorist law UAPA for raising slogans and stone-pelting in protest in Srinagar.

The Jammu and Kashmir police said more accused are being identified and will be arrested soon. Some would be booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) that allows the government to detain a person without trial for up to a year, the police said.

The arrests were made during multiple midnight raids by the police. The main accused has also been arrested, the police said.

The police also said that the accused were involved in rioting, anti-national/communal sloganeering and hooliganism outside Yasin Malik’s house before his sentencing yesterday.

On Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of youths and women took to the streets of Srinagar to protest against the sentencing of Yasin Malik.

Clashes were also reported on Wednesday between the Yasin Malik supporters and security forces in Maisuma locality in Srinagar, even as parts of the city observed a spontaneous shutdown ahead of the court’s verdict in a terror funding case.

The protesters also threw stones at the police and paramilitary forces deployed in Srinagar city. The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Yesterday, the Kashmiri seperatist leader Yasin Malik had been awarded two life sentences and five punishments of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special Delhi court.

During the hearing, Malik had questioned that time Atal Vihari government. Why he had given him a passport and allow him to travel and speak around the world if he was a criminal, he asked. He has been doing non-violent politics in the valley since 1994 when he had gave up arms, Malik told the court.
