Nitin Gadkari welcomes Tesla to set up shops in India, says Tesla should not import cars from China for domestic sale

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has welcomed the US electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc to set up shops in India saying that Tesla should not import cars from China for domestic sale. Making in China and selling in India is not a good proposition, Gadkari, minister of road transport and highways said during a government conference.

Tesla is looking forward to importing and selling its electric vehicles in India but has not revealed a firm plan to invest in India.

The move would be in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India vision to boost local manufacturing and create jobs.

Tesla chief Elon Musk feels that tariffs in India are among the highest in the world.

The company in August had received approval to make or import four models in India.

Tesla produces vehicles in factories in the U.S. and China and is awaiting final approval for a new plant in Germany.

The meetings come after Union Minister Gadkari warned that a heavy penalty will be imposed if any company is found negligent in its processes. He also recalled all defective vehicles after a spate of deadly electric two-wheeler fires.

In a set of tweets, Gadkari said that the government has constituted an expert committee to enquire into these incidents and make recommendations on remedial steps. The government would issue quality-centric guidelines for electric vehicles, he said in his tweet.

If any company is found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered, he tweeted.
