Baisakhi 2022: From Meethey Yellow Rice to Kesar Phirni, here are 5 traditional dishes to celebrate Sikh New Year

Baisakhi, a spring festival, also known as Vaisakh is celebrated every year on April 13.  It’s a tribute to Mother Nature, who has provided us with a bountiful harvest. Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, also founded the Khalsa Panth on Baisakhi in 1699. He offered nectar to five of his followers and welcomed them into the Sikh martial society.

The sacred Guru Granth sahib was founded as the community’s religious guide on this day, which marks the beginning of Sikhism. People sing traditional kirtans and dance bhangra to the sounds of nagada during the celebration.

It is celebrated in Punjabi homes with a variety of foods cooked with a lot of love. This harvest festival (when Rabi crops are harvested) is celebrated on the first day of Baisakh and has many yellow-colored delicacies in its cuisine.

Traditional dishes to have on Baisakhi

Meethey Yellow Rice

This delicacy is made especially during Baisakhi. The cooked rice is exquisite, made with dried fruits like apricots or anjeer, raisins, peaches, almonds, pistachios, and exotic spices like cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. The addition of sugar syrup and saffron (which gives the dish a yellowish tinge) enhances the food’s appearance and texture.

Mango Lassi

A refreshing, tasty, and sweetened curd-based drink made with seasonal ripe mangoes is a popular delicacy in Punjab and Haryana, but it’s also popular throughout the country. This classic summer beverage, cherished by Punjabis, can be drunk in a large glass in either sweet or salty form.

Kesar Phirni

On this particular occasion, it is an exquisite dish cooked with a substantial amount of creamy milk and rice. The addition of saffron to the creamy, semi-condensed top of the dessert just brightens it up. It’s also a good idea to put in some dried fruits to round out the flavour.

Coconut Laddoo

These are also known as nariyal ke laddoo and are an important part of Baisakhi’s traditional meal. These sweetmeats are made with shredded coconut, semolina, sugar, condensed milk, and ghee and are quite satisfying.

Kada Prashad

Kada Prashad is a halwa made with whole wheat flour (atta) that is smooth, soft, velvety, and rich. This incredibly tasty halwa called Kada Prashad is one of the delicacies offered as prasad at gurudwaras.
