Delhi may report fresh 14,000 Covid-19 cases today, Health Minister Satyendra Jain says no need for lockdown

The national capital is witnessing a sharp surge in Covid-19 cases since the last four days. Satyendra Jain, Delhi’s Health Minister said that the city is likely to report 14,000 Covid-19 cases today and the daily positivity rate may rise to around 14 percent.

When asked about the death ratio in the capital, he claimed that the current Covid fatality ratio in the city is one death per 1,000 cases, which is better than the last wave.

Concerned about the rising number of Covid infections, Jain stated that the scenario will become clearer in three to four days and that the government has made all necessary preparations to cope with the situation.

The minister also told reporters that the city is in a good place in terms of hospital bed occupancy and that there is no need for a lockdown at this time. He further added that most patients in hospitals have mild symptoms and do not require oxygen support. The health department is monitoring the situation closely.

A significant number of tests have been conducted. If we don’t do so, the number of new cases could drop to 500-1,000. Many states refuse to undertake tests, claiming that there are no cases. We’ve been transparent and upfront, he said, noting that Delhi is undertaking the maximum number of tests in the country.

In response to a question about the number of healthcare professionals who have tested positive for Covid, he claimed that the number is not alarming and that no one has died from Omicron infection since the variant’s pandemic.

When asked if the AAP government was planning a city lockdown, Jain stated that the city has already taken strict measures, such as enforcing a night and weekend curfew, which are sufficient for the time being. At this time, there is no need for a lockdown.

On Wednesday, Delhi reported 10,665 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, an increase of 94.58 percent from the day before, making it the biggest one-day spike in daily Covid-19 cases since May 12.
