President Ram Nath Kovind launches NALSA’s 6-week legal services campaign

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, President Ram Nath Kovind launched a six-week campaign called the Pan India Awareness and Outreach Campaign from October 2 to November 14, organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The campaign was launched to spread awareness among the people about the functioning of legal services and institutions, as well as to provide them Pro-Bono services. Apart from this, they also emphasised that legal services should be made available to people in every nook and corner.

In the event, Chief Justice of India and Patron-in-Chief of NALSA, Justice N.V. Ramana; Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju; Executive Chairman of NALSA Justice U.U. Lalit, Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts and other esteemed dignitaries were present.

President in the inaugural address said that as a country, we need to graduate from women development to women-led development. He further said that the people in the nook and corner should have access to the best legal talent at reasonable costs. Moreover, the people in legal services should practice Pro-Bono services so that the weaker section can also get access to weaker sections.

Justice UU Lalit said that the major backdrop of law is that it has not yet reached every nook and corner of the country. He also said that people will be able to raise their voice and stand for themselves if they get good confidence and knowledge about the law and that will only be possible if people start doing quality legal aid for people. Justice UU Lalit laid emphasis on pro-bono work and said that those who are practising law should do pro-bono work on their own.
