Very soon the existence of country’s first and oldest public service broadcaster Doordarshan will disappear from our TV screen. Doordarshan centres operating in different cities of Bihar will also be closed. The High Power Doordarshan Transmitter Centre at Diwari, Saharsa and Doordarshan Kendras in Bhagalpur and Siwan districts will not be operational from 31 October. A total of 152 Prasar Bharati Doordarshan Kendras established in the cities of different states, including 15 centres located in Bihar will be closed from December 31. This decision has been taken by Prasar Bharati Public Broadcaster Directorate of Doordarshan, New Delhi.

On September 15th, 1959 the first telecast of Doordarshan was launched as an educational and development program on an experimental basis. Currently, there are about 466 Doordarshan Kendras running across the country. Government has issued different dates for the closure of Doordarshan Kendra.

Government has decided to completely shut down the services of Prasar Bharati Doordarshan Kendra operating in the cities of different states of the country in three phases annexure wise and has also released the annexure wise closure date of Doordarshan Kendra. In this, 151 centres of the country under Annexure B, which has 108 digital transmitter relay centres, will be closed on 31 March 2022, 109 centres under Annexure C on 31 December 2021 and 152 Doordarshan centres under Annexure D on 31 October. Whereas the 54 centres under Annexure A, which are located in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep, will remain active as it is.

Doordarshan was started way back in 1959 and relay centres were set up in every city for the telecast of Doordarshan. Earlier, Doordarshan channel was broadcast on television through antenna. In the present era, now the DTH platform is broadcasting other channels including Doordarshan. Due to this the need for these centres has ended. Due to this, Prasar Bharati has decided to close the relay centres across country.
