Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, security has been tightened at the Red Fort and the Delhi Police has placed shipping containers at the entrance of the iconic fort in a way that they look like towering walls. The Delhi police say it is being done for security reasons, keeping January 26 violence in mind.

Citing the violent clashes that took place during the farmers’ tractor rally on Republic Day in the national capital, the police said this time they are taking no chances.

The containers will be decorated with graffitis before Independence Day. According to reports, Independence Day-theme paintings will be painted on the walls of the containers.

However, some reports also suggest that this is being done after the recent drone attacks.

Every year, the Prime Minister addresses the nation on the Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

The tractor rally resulted in chaos on the occasion of Republic Day due to clashes between the police and the protesters. The protesters even entered Red Fort and waved religious flags from the ramparts. During the protests, one person was killed when his tractor overturned. A total of 394 police personnel were injured while 30 police vehicles were damaged in the violence. In order to avoid such an incident again, the police are on high alert bearing in mind terror threats.
