Indian golfer Aditi Ashok narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal on Saturday and finished fourth in the women’s individual stroke play event at Tokyo 2020 Games.

Despite her sensational performance in the majority of the four rounds, the 23-year-old ended two strokes off the pace with a total of 15-under 269, just missed the silver medal by one stroke. She signed off 4th after carding a 3-under 68 in the final round.

The golfer said it was hard for her to be happy with the fourth place even though she played well and gave it her 100 percent. She was studded with five birdies on the 5th, 6th, 8th, 13th, and 14th holes against two bogeys on the 9th and 11th in the final round. She had her mother Maheshwari as her caddie.

The world number 200 Indian competed with World No. 1 and gold medalist Nelly Korda of the USA and former World No. 1 Lydia Ko of New Zealand. Nelly bagged the gold medal with a score of 17-under-267 while Lydia won bronze in a play-off with Japan’s Inami who finished with a silver medal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and lauded Aditi for his exemplary performance. He said the Indian golfer has shown tremendous skill and resolve during Tokyo2020. Though she narrowly missed the medal, she has gone farther than any Indian and blazed a trail. Best wishes for your future endeavours, he wrote.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind also expressed his appreciation for the Bengaluru-based golfer. He said one more daughter of India makes her mark, taking Indian golfing to new heights by today’s historic performance. She has played with immense calm and poise, said the president congratulating her for the impressive display of grit and skills.

Diksha Dagar, another Indian in the fray, finished her campaign with an aggregate total of 6-over 290.
