Top Meghalaya news: Assam-Meghalaya CMs meet, HM directs closure of illegal coke factories, Covid-19 update

Meghalaya, Assam held second Chief Ministerial level talks in Guwahati, Meghalaya Home Minister directed to shutdown Illegal Coke Factories, the State recorded 576 new COVID-19 cases and 8 COVID-19 related deaths.

Assam, Meghalaya Chief Ministers hold 2nd round of talks

Meghalaya and Assam on Friday held the second Chief Ministerial level talks on inter-state boundary disputes in Guwahati. In the meeting, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma decided to take up six areas of differences of the 12 disputed areas in a phase-wise manner. The six areas of differences includes Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara (Pilingkata) and Ratacherra.

Both the states decided that a three Regional Committees –headed by one Cabinet Minister each from both the states – will be constituted to look into the matters of the 6 areas of differences. It was also decided that the Regional Committees will make joint visits and submit their report within 30 days.  

The first round of the Chief Ministerial-level talks between the two was held on July 23 in Shillong.

Meghalaya HM directs shutdown of illegal coke factories

As the protests against Illegal Coke plants in East Jaintia Hills are growing stronger, Meghalaya government has ordered shut down of all illegal coke factories.

Speaking to reporters, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said he has instructed the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police to take stern action against illegal units of coke.

Recently, residents of Sutnga Elaka hold a protest rally against the illegal coke factories which have mushroomed in East Jaintia Hills, and demanded the closure of these factories.

Meghalaya COVID-19 Update

Meghalaya on Thursday recorded 576 fresh infections and 8 Covid-19 related deaths. Meanwhile, 510 Covid patients have recovered in last 24 hours. So far, the state has reported a total of 67,592 Covid-19 cases out of which 5,574 are active cases, 60,885 recovered and 1,133 deaths.
