Pushkar Singh Dhami picked to be new Uttarakhand CM, 3rd in 4 months

Two time MLA from Kumaon region (Khatima constituency) Pushkar Singh Dhami has been picked as new Uttarakhand Chief Minister replacing Tirath Singh Rawat.

The BJP legislator party announced his name for the post of Uttarakhand CM 57 BJP MLAs in Uttarakhand met today and held discussions with Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and other BJP leaders at the party headquarters in Dehradun.

Dhami is a young leader who had been president of BJP youth wing in the hill state and had also an officer on special duty to former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari.

The change in leadership has come a day after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned from the top post amid infighting and fading chances of his getting elected to the state Legislative Assembly by September 10.

Asking about his candidature for the CM post, Trivendra Singh Rawat, rejected the reports saying he was not part of the race earlier or today. Speaking on Tirath Singh Rawat’s resignation, he said that it would have led to a Constitutional crisis had he not resigned.

Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat on Friday said Tirath Singh Rawat’s resignation as Uttarakhand CM due to constitutional compulsion and by-elections cannot be held in the state due to Covid, is the biggest lie.

Earlier in the day, BJP leader Tirath Singh Rawat expressed confidence that the saffron party will win in the 2022 assembly elections.

Nearly half-a-dozen names including Satpal Maharaj, Dhan Singh Rawat, Trivendra Singh Rawat and Pushkar Singh Dhami were fighting for the top job.

Tirath Singh Rawat, till then an MP, was sworn in as Chief Minister in March following fierce dissent against Trivendra Singh Rawat. His 114-day stint was full of packed with controversies which embarrassed his party by criticising his predecessor’s policy decisions. His handling of the Kumbh Mela at the peak of the Covid spike and the comment that no RT-PCR test was required provoked a huge backlash in the state.
