The BJP on Thursday announced that Metro Man E. Sreedharan would be the party’s Chief Minister candidate for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, Union Minister V. Muraleedharan tweeted Thursday evening.

Kerala BJP will fight Kerala polls with E. Sreedharanji as its chief ministerial candidate. The party will defeat both CPM and Congress to provide a corruption-free, development-oriented governance for the people of Kerala, Muraleedharan said.

Two weeks ago, after announcing his decision to join the BJP, Sreedharan had expressed the desire to contest in state Assembly elections scheduled to be held from April 6 to May 2.

On Thursday, Sreedharan said he has not decided on a constituency and that he is ready to contest in any seat, and victory is sure for him. He strongly believes that BJP will come to power. However, he wants to contest from a constituency which is not far away from Ponnani in Malappuram, where he is residing now, he said.

Sreedharan, who has been the mentor of the Kochi Metro project, said he would not do a conventional door-to-door campaign but his message would reach the voters, he said in Kochi.

The retired Delhi Metro chief came into the spotlight when he worked on restoring the Pamban bridge in Tamil Nadu, the link between Rameswaram and the mainland. The bridge was damaged by a cyclone. He then was known for his stewardship of the Konkan Railway project.

He has been conferred several honours, including the country’s fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
