AAP wins 4 seats in Delhi civic body polls, Congress bags 1

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday won four of the five seats in Delhi’s Civic Body Bypolls. The elections were held on five seats- Kalyanpuri, Rohini-C, Trilokpuri, Shalimar Bagh and Chauhan Bangar. Congress managed to secure one seat, while the BJP that had earlier held one of the seats, could not win a single ward in the bypolls. The vote counting which began in the morning was completed before 11 AM.

In Kalyanpuri, AAP’s candidate Dhirendra Kumar won with a margin of 7,043 votes, while in Trilokpuri, AAP’s Vijay Kumar secured win by defeating BJP’s Om Prakash by 4,986 votes. In Rohini-C ward, Ram Chander of the AAP defeated BJP candidate Rakesh Goyal by 2,985 votes. In Shalimar Bagh, Sunit Mishra of AAP won the Civic Body polls by defeating Surbhi Jaju of the BJP by 2,705 votes. The seat was earlier held by the BJP, news agency PTI reported.

Congress candidate Zubair Ahmad Chaudhary was declared the winner by 10,642 votes from Chauhan Banger, according to ANI.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that Delhi has voted for the work done by the party. People of Delhi are fed up of the BJP’s 15 years of misadministration and that’s why they are voting for the Aam Aadmi Party even in civic body bypolls.

In a tweet, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated his party workers and wrote, congratulations to the Aam Aadmi Party workers on winning 4 out of 5 seats in the MCD by-election. People of Delhi are fed up of the BJP’s rule. In next year’s MCD election, people will vote for Arvind Kejriwal’s honest politics.

The voting was necessitated after AAP councillors in four wards were elected as MLAs. In the fifth ward, the Bharatiya Janata Party councillor Renu Jaju who held the Shalimar Bagh (North) seat had died in 2019.

More than 50 per cent votes were cast in the civic body bypolls for the five municipal wards held on Sunday.

The BJP has been controlling all three corporations since 2012, when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was divided into North, South and East corporations. In the 2017 elections, the BJP had won 181 seats, AAP 48 and Congress got 30.
