Congress social media team lacks access to resources unlike BJP: Ramya

Congress social media head Divya Spandana claimed that despite several limitations Rahul Gandhi’s team is doing a really good job with tweeting.

In a bitter tone of regret, the head of the Social Media and Digital Communications team of Congress, Divya Spandana claimed that the party’s social media team lacks enough access to resources and information unlike the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking at a panel discussion at the Harvard Kennedy School on “social media in Indian politics”, organised by the university in Cambridge, the actor-turned-politician, professionally known as Ramya, claimed that despite several limitations the party president Rahul Gandhi’s team is doing a really good job with tweeting.

“The fact that they have access to a lot of resources and therefore they can use a lot of tools is something that I envy. We don’t have any resources. We are limited in our resources sort of access, of tools and software,” said Spandana.

“I think, his team is doing a really good job with tweeting for him. For example, when it comes to festivals and wishing people, they are pretty prompt and pretty quick. The team is doing a really good job,” she added.

With repeated questions on who writes the Congress president’s tweets, Spandana said “Gandhi himself”.

Responding to Spandana’s remarks, BJP leader Madhukeshwar Desai said that the social media team of Rahul Gandhi has a good sense of humour. He further stated that since the party’s victory in the 2014 elections, the saffron party has used social media effectively to dispense the message that they have gone the last mile using social media.

Desai also faced some tough questions during the debate, with a few asking why Prime Minister Narendra Modi missed tweeting about some of the burning issues in the country and why there are reports on BJP and its supporters spreading fake news on social media.

However, Desai claimed, “These individuals, websites or channels are not owned or controlled by the party.”

Other than the Congress and BJP representatives the hour-long debate also marked the presence of Ankit Lal of the Aam Admi Party and Ghanshyam Tiwari of the Samajwadi Party.
