US congressman steps down from key committee over sexual harassment allegations

John Conyers, currently the longest-serving member of Congress, is to step down from the House Judiciary Committee, after being embroiled in allegations of sexual harassment.
Mr Conyers, 88, is to recuse himself from the Committee while it conducts an ethics investigation into the allegations which involve a former member of his staff.
His decision comes against a backdrop of growing concern about sexual harassment on Capitol Hill which, according to some reports, has been endemic for years.
Last month the Washington Post reported that Congress has paid out more than $15 million to settle cases of alleged discrimination and harassment.
Two members of Congress, Jackie Speier, a Democrat from California and Barbara Comstock, a Republican from Virginia, are jointly sponsoring a bill which would overhaul how Congress handles complaints of sexual harassment.
The bill would require compulsory training on harassment and discrimination for all members of Congress and their staff.
Mr Conyers, a Democrat who entered the House of Representatives in 1965 and is a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, has been under mounting pressure to since details emerged of the complaint which was made by the former staffer in 2015.
Although he paid $30,000 to settle the complaint, Mr Conyers has strongly denied any wrongdoing and insisted the payment was not an admission of liability.
“After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters,"  the Michigan congressman said.
“I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger," Mr Conyers added in his statement.
"I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics."
Meanwhile Al Franken, the Minnesota senator accused of groping a radio host while she slept during his days as a comedian, has said he was embarrassed and ashamed.
Speaking to local media outlets Mr Franken, added: I’ve let a lot of people down and I’m hoping I can make it up to them and gradually regain their trust.”
