The United States had by far a larger middle class, mainly small property holders, than any other Country. Its Protestant sectarians, Puritans, Pilgrims, Congregationalists, Baptists, Quakers, Reformed and others--more important there than elsewhere--gave the country greater emphasis on literacy and education.
