Along with toilet paper and other essentials, Covid-19 has brought about a shortage of hand Sanitizer. Frequently, cleaning your hands and using sanitizer is one of the easiest, preventative measures to take for you to reduce the chance of getting infected by the Covid-19 virus.  So, why am I telling you not to make your own?  This article will tell you why it is not recommended.

FYI-Even if you aren’t concerned about the Coronavirus, you should still practice proper hygiene and clean your hands regularly.

Here Are The Reasons Why You Should Think Twice About DIY Sanitizer

Making your effective sanitizer is a very complicated process. If you don’t believe me, download this official sanitizer recipe/instructions from the World Health Organization. (“WHO”) The main reason for this complexity is that, for hand sanitizer to be effective, it must have the proper ratio of ingredients, and you have to follow the instructions strictly.

For example, the Center for Disease Control recommends that sanitizer be at least 60% alcohol. If you get too much alcohol or too little alcohol, it can result in it being either too harsh or too mild. So, if you mess it up, your product will either be not sufficient to kill the virus, or it can potentially cause harm.  For the untrained getting, this specific percentage can be quite tricky.

So, What Should You Do If You Are Out Of Hand Sanitizer?

First of all, hand sanitizer is not a substitute for washing your hands with Soap and hot water. Therefore, unless you are out of soap and water, don’t substitute sanitizer for good old soap and water. So, to answer the above question, use good old, soap, and water, and wait until you can buy store-bought, hand sanitizer.
