Yes, These Cars Still Exist!

Sometimes the past has a sneaky way of catching up with you.

You’ll be motoring around, singing a happy song, when you notice something you haven’t seen since 1999. Except instead of looking how it did in 1999, it looks strangely modern. This is what happened to me recently when I got passed on the highway by a brand new Ford Expedition, complete with a temporary dealer license plate.

The last new Expedition I can recall seeing was from the late 1990s or early 2000s and it hadn’t occurred to me that Ford still makes them. Here we are, two decades after the Expedition was first introduced, and they are still chugging down the Production line.

But the old Ford isn’t the only car that exists long after being forgotten by some of us.

Lincoln Navigator

Not only does the Navigator still exist, it’s being re-imagined and will see production as an all-new 2018 model that will position itself as a quiet, understated alternative to the Cadillac Escalade. (Yes, the Escalade is still in production too.)

Toyota Land Cruiser

You might notice a theme that the cars we forgot about are all full-size SUVs. That’s a segment we thought died with fuel economy requirements, but the Land Cruiser is yet another example of an SUV that soldiers on no matter the conditions. In fact, the Land Cruiser has been in production since 1951 and shows no signs of being phased away anytime soon. If you want a new one, though, be prepared to shell out close to $90,000.

Toyota Avalon

I had a boss in 1997 who purchased a brand new ’98 Avalon. The car had only been on the market for a couple of years at that point, but I remember wondering why he didn’t purchase one of those fancy new Lexus cars instead. Twenty years later that’s a question I still ask myself. The Avalon, somehow, is in its 22nd year of production and going strong.

What car are you surprised to find out still exists?
