Friday News Brief: Democratic Debate, GLAAD, Gravitational Waves, Outfest Fusion, Tom Daley

DEM DEBATE. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders faced off in Milwaukee last night. Some takeaways, here. Watch a recap below.

KARMA. Pharma-douche Martin Shkreli owes $4,628,928 in unpaid taxes: “The vast majority of Shkreli’s unpaid taxes, $4.625 million, was incurred in 2014, according to a copy of a filing on record at the register’s office that Gawker posted online. Another $3,431 in unpaid taxes were incurred in 2013, according to the lien.”

ATTN: FANNILOWS. Barry Mannilow has been hospitalized and had to undergo emergency oral surgery: “Barry is out of surgery and doing well. His Doctors report that the surgery was successful and they expect no further complications. For the next forty eight hours, Manilow has been instructed not to talk, sing, or rap. Barry thanks everyone for their well wishes and concern.”

BLOGOSPHERE. Glaad apologizes for removing Outstanding Blog Category from 2016 GLAAD Awards and promises to reinstate the category next year:

“The contributions of LGBT bloggers and independent media have been critical to the advancement of this movement and, indeed, GLAAD’s mission. Eliminating the Outstanding Blog category was an affront to the tireless efforts of those whose work has been essential to putting a spotlight on the issues LGBT people face, and which too often goes overlooked. Removing the category was wrong, and we are committed to doing better.”

Towleroad agrees with the letter posted by Alvin McEwen that called on GLAAD to reinstate the category. We also applaud the work of blogger Mark S. King who was nominated for the GLAAD Outstanding Blog Award in 2015.

FILM. Outfest Fusion LGBT People of Color Film Festival announces lineup.

FBF. Matt Bomer looks good as a 1930s Hollywood mogul.

IMA LET YOU FINISH REDUX. Kanye West drops new song with lyrics, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous.” The universe explodes. The squad comes for Kanye.

And now my dear friend Taylor.. Right before another huge moment for her.. Can I still support him and call myself a feminist? A friend? No.

TED CRUZ. Cruz campaign pulls “Conservatives Anonymous” ad attacking Marco Rubio because it features a female “softcore porn star”: “‘Had the campaign known of her full filmography, we obviously would not have let her appear in the ad,’ a Cruz campaign spokesman told BuzzFeed News. Lindsay, Buzzfeed says, ’emphasized that she did not do hardcore porn and that she also appeared in non-erotic films.'”

SCIENCE. Scientists are freaking out about gravitational waves: “They have observed the warping of space-time generated by the collision of two black holes more than a billion light-years from Earth. The international team says the first detection of these Gravitational Waves will usher in a new era for astronomy. It is the culmination of decades of searching and could ultimately offer a window on the Big Bang.”

IN PRINT. Adele covers the March 2016 issue of Vogue, talks age, motherhoods, and losing weight.

GENES. New study suggests ties between Neanderthal DNA and depression: “Some of the findings were more difficult to explain. For example, the study authors wrote that Neanderthal variants were associated with an increased risk of mood disorders, tobacco addiction and a relatively strong effect on depression.”

ROAD TO RIO. Tom Daley hopes he and synchronized diving partner Dann Goodfellow can qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
