The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq is the first entry into the world of pure electric motoring for automaker Hyundai. Kia has produced the Niro, which is in fact the sibling of the Ioniq, and these two cars share the same platform as well.

The Ioniq is set to compete against the likes of the Toyota Prius, the Chevrolet Bolt and Volt, and the new A3 e-tron from Audi as well. While available both in a conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid avatars as well, the 2017 Ioniq is taking the challenge of fully electric mobility head on.

Unlike so many other electric and hybrid vehicles, the new Hyundai Ioniq is much more pleasing to the eye. One look at the Hyundai Ioniq images and you can make out that Hyundai took the design of a conventional vehicle and gave a futuristic twist to it.

Right off the bat, you’ll notice that the Ioniq is equipped with Hyundai’s Fluidic design language, featuring the signature trapezium shaped grille, sharply swept back headlight clusters, a long sloping windshield, and side panels that are very flat and smooth but with the addition of one single horizontal accent line for effect.

The rear of the vehicle looks really cool as well, with its raked profile, sculpted tail lamps and the windshield-mounted rear spoiler which looks great, though it will undoubtedly hamper rear visibility.

The inside of the new 2017 Ioniq is quite roomy. This car has a huge advantage over rivals such as the Toyota Prius, as it comes with 5 seats instead of the 4 found in the Prius.

Mind you, the rear middle seat of the Ioniq should be thought of as an emergency seat as you will be leaning against the rear armrest while sitting on it. But there is no doubt that while sitting inside the new Ioniq, you will definitely get more space than the interior of the Kia Niro and the Toyota Prius.

Tiny Power Plant, Huge Power!

Instead of a tank filled with non-renewable, planet damaging fossil fuels, the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq relies on a 28 kWh battery pack to power an electric motor. Interestingly, Hyundai claims the 2017 Ioniq will crunch through 125 miles between recharging pit-stops, which is more than other electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and the Ford Focus electric.

Even more commendable is the fact that the Ioniq’s battery pack is smaller than that of the Leaf, Kia Soul and the BMW i3. The car can also outstrip the Toyota Prius in off-the-line acceleration. The 125 mile range is excellent, meaning that you can actually do intercity journeys without worrying about running out of power in the middle of nowhere. they even have a term for this, it’s called “range anxiety”.

Charges Quickly, But Still Not Quick Enough

One gripe that we all have when it comes to electric cars is the ridiculously long durations it takes to charge them up. Although no car manufacturer has solved this issue yet, they certainly are heading in the correct direction.

Hyundai says that their 2017 Ioniq can store enough charge in half an hour for 99 miles of driving. In the same time frame, a Chevy Bolt will charge only around to last 90 miles, despite the fact that it uses a slightly higher charging wattage than the Ioniq.

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq price hovers between US$ 19,000 and US$ 23,000, after taking into consideration the tax credit and other government reimbursements.
