Additionally, if you’re planning on wearing any special outfits or accessories for your photos, springtime offers more options than other seasons due to its mild temperatures.

Plus, fall offers some gorgeous backdrops with its changing leaves and warm colors. If you want tall grasses or even sunflowers in your shots, choosing fall for your senior pictures is an absolute must. Additionally, fall is usually less crowded than other times of year so you won’t have to worry about competing with other people for prime photo spots.

The Benefits of Taking Senior Pictures in the Summer

Summer is naturally what comes to mind for senior pictures. It usually provides the most scheduling opportunities since you don’t have to worry about studying, tests, sport practices, etc. Summer offers some gorgeous opportunities around lakes and streams while everything is in full bloom. However, there are also some downsides to consider. Namely, summer is the most crowded time of year. Plus, it can be incredibly hot and sweaty. The last two things you want for your senior pictures are people in the background of the shots and your hair sticking to you face and neck due to the heat. If you want to do your senior pictures during the summer, I highly suggest scheduling it as early in the morning as you possibly can to allow you to beat the crowds and heat.

The Benefits of Taking Senior Pictures in the Winter

If winter sports like snowboarding, downhill skiing, and cross country skiing are your thing, you should definitely consider scheduling your senior pictures during the winter with the snow! Most seniors that schedule winter snow sessions for their senior pictures also schedule second session during the summer or fall to capture shots where they aren’t bundled up in snow gear.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Time for Your Senior Pictures

When deciding when to take your senior pictures, there are several things you should consider before making a final decision:

• Weather: Depending on where you live, certain months may be too hot or too cold for taking outdoor photos comfortably. Make sure you check the forecast before scheduling your session so you don’t end up being uncomfortable during your shoot! For what it is worth, I actually reschedule more sessions due to wind than rain. It doesn’t take much of a breeze to blow hair everywhere.
• Personal Preferences: Think about what kind of background and atmosphere you want in your photos and choose a time that will best suit those needs. If you want vibrant colors in your photos, spring or fall might be better options than winter or summer months.
• Sunrise or Sunset: Most people assume that the “golden hour” before sunset makes the best senior pictures. However, the same hour in the morning at sunrise provides similar golden light with the added benefit of not competing for the location with 100’s of people photobombing the backgrounds of the shots. Scheduling your session first thing in the morning almost guarantees you will have free reign of the location with the ability to take photos in the middle of streets and more without concern for everyone and their uncle in the background.
