6 Shutter Speed Techniques on Landscape Photography

There so many ways to increase expression and mood on landscape photographs, sometimes it’s enough  just change the Shutter Speed parameter , we can get many variant of good photos and different from standard photos. So here we go, let’s figure out the best shutter speed technique bellow:

1. Creative Shutter Speed on Landscape Photographs : Waterfall
f/22, 2,5 seconds, ISO 100, 22mm
The most dramatic way to shoot waterfall  or water flow is using very slow shutter speed. Look at sample photo above, Aperture setting on f/22 and ISO 200 with the shutter speed 2.5 seconds, so that the water looks like cotton.  Try to find clean waterfall without any trash and use this technique.  It will more  be great if you have NFD filter and polarization, but it’s not absolute requirement. Don’t forget for the low speed shutter like that , use the tripod.

2. Creative Shutter Speed on  Landscape Photographs:  Light Trail Photo
To make lamp impression (light trail, traffic trail) in the night or dim light. Avoid the traffic jam road, because how low the shutter speed that we use, the traffic jam can move and we won’t get amazing picture of light trail photo.
f/16, 30 seconds, ISO 100, 35mm
3. Creative Shutter Speed On Landscape photo: Sea Foam / river water flow
If you have ND filter, you can try this technique in afternoon. Try to shoot the sea foam (river water flow , if your location is so far from beach) with shutter speed 5 seconds or more slow, so the Wave in the ocean will be looked like soft cotton and moreover like very soft fog. More slow your shutter speed, ripple and wave will more looks so dramatic and more  like fog or shiny  marble stuff . If yo have ND filter “big stopper” that decrease 3 until 10 lights stop, marble effect will so difficult to reach.
f/8, 10 seconds, ISO 200, 26mm

f/11, 10 seconds, ISO 100, 55mm

f/8, 25 seconds, ISO 200, 23mm
4. Creative Shutter Speed on Landscape Photo : Freezing Wave
Reverse with the 3rd technique above, at this time we try to use fastest shutter speed that we have on camera. If you use slow shutter speed ( shoot in the noon or don’t bring filter),it’s doesn’t matter, you should use fast shutter speed. When you get shutter speed above 1/250 seconds, so be creative with that. Stop and freeze the wave, water flow, ripple water or any movements of water on that speed. When you use this technique, more length the focal length of lens , more advance the ability to capture the moment, more dramatic your photograph.
