PDRA01 Application Process Cut from 6 weeks to 24 hours!

We’re excited to share news of a major update in the Application process for Specific Category Operational Authorisations. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has introduced a simplified, more efficient application procedure through a new online platform, designed to significantly speed up and streamline the process for applicants.

This innovation begins with the launch of the platform for Pdra-01 applications, a category that represents 90% of all Operational Authorisation (OA) requests within the Specific Category. Such prioritisation promises to deliver substantial benefits to users swiftly, especially as the UK SORA policy continues to evolve.

Note: Existing PDRA01 Operational Authorisations remain unaffected and will continue to be valid until their expiration date.

The highlights of the new PDRA01 Application Tool include:

  • Streamlined Application Process: The applications for PDRA01 will be declarative, vastly reducing the amount of information needed upfront, simplifying the application process.
  • Rapid Processing: Most applications will receive an authorisation outcome within 24 hours, expediting the overall process.
  • Unified Application Fee: A single fee of £234 applies to all applications and reapplications, simplifying the payment process.
  • Efficient Reapplication Timeline: Operators are required to reapply within 28 days of their current authorisation’s expiry, reducing administrative tasks.
  • Automatic Notifications and Self-Service Access: Applicants will receive automatic expiry notifications and can view and download their PDRA01 Operational Authorisation certificates at any time via the online tool.
  • Continued Oversight: The oversight regime ensures compliance through requests for up-to-date Operations Manuals and evidence of adherence, like logbooks and supporting documents.

Applicants looking to utilise the new PDRA01 Application Tool should note that:

  • Applications can be made up to 28 days before the current authorisation expires, with the new authorisation becoming valid immediately after the previous one expires.
  • The declarative nature of the system means that most authorisations are granted within 24 hours, although it’s recommended to apply at least 7 working days before the current authorisation’s expiry date.
  • The fee for using the new tool is set at £234, reflecting the CAA’s commitment to maintaining regulatory oversight, policy development, and the integration of improved technologies within the RPAS industry. This fee will be reviewed annually, ensuring it aligns with the CAA’s regulatory service costs.

Steve Coulson, Co-Founder of Coptrz, stated: “Streamlining the application process for Specific Category Operational Authorisations represents a significant milestone for the industry. This new online platform not only makes the application process much easier, but also marks a turning point in how we approach efficiency and compliance. The update removes hurdles while enhancing safety and operational readiness. We believe these changes will greatly benefit the entire industry, fostering innovation and growth.”

PDRA01 holders will continue to be subject to oversight checks throughout the 12-month validity period of their Operational Authorisation, emphasising the CAA’s commitment to safety and compliance.
