Following a small number of ESC incidents surrounding the marketing leading Matrice M200 Series v1 enterprise level drone, DJI have today issued a formal statement in response to the reported issues.

DJI Statement On M200 v1 Series ESC Incidents

Since the reporting of a small number of M200 series incidents, DJI has treated these issues with absolute priority and has thoroughly investigated all cases. After a physical component analysis of the devices we are unable to identify a common cause however suspect that these isolated cases may have resulted from water infiltration.

DJI’s M200 Series has been independently tested to an IP43 rating which certifies that:-

1. a) Protection is provided against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects down to 1mm in diameter.
2. b) Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect.

The M200 Series is not suitable to be operated in conditions or precipitation greater than those stated above.

All users of M210 series drones should refer to our current maintenance guidelines and safety information (M200 series here and M200 V2 series here) to help manage their aircraft and maximise flight safety.

DJI is working to update these maintenance guidelines with more specific details, including the life expectancy of aircraft and parts, as well as recommended replacement schedules. DJI is also preparing a catalogue of DJI reliability and safety standards to help customers manage their maintenance requirements.

So what can we take away from this?

The main takeaway is that it is safe to fly your DJI Matrice M200 v1! They have tested, tested and tested again and it is safe flown in the correct conditions.

As DJI have themselves pointed out, their report is not a conclusive finding, that said they have spent weeks and months investigating all cases and have not found any common technical issues or faults with the system. By process of elimination they have therefore come to this conclusion following a rigorous investigative process.

Does this help our choices?

Yes and no. Nothing has changed really in that to ensure smooth and safe operations it is imperative that guidelines are followed carefully and that your UAV is only flown in the advised conditions. Of course weather can be changeable and air humidity can result in unexpected accumulation of moisture, the risk of these are all a judgement call by the pilot. This does however reiterate the importance of such decisions and that these machines are not totally weatherproof, sometimes we can take this for granted.

What about the DJI Matrice M200 series v2.0?

It is important to point out that for whatever reason there have been no such issues with the v2.0, so if you are considering a purchase or upgrade then we 100% recommend the v2.0 without hesitation.
