3 Tips For Aspiring Street Photographers

Street Photography is a candid-style done in public with an approach similar to photojournalism that essentially involves people in a populated environment, such as a city.  Street photographers focus on the lives of strangers rather than an important event.  The intent of street photography is to capture scenes unaffected by the photographer to represent a natural story as it unfolds.   Grand Lens Photography shares 3 tips for aspiring street photographers on how to capture the essence of the streets.

John Rowell

1) Lenses and camera settings

Ditch the zoom lens.  Prime lenses comparable to a 35mm or 50mm provide sharper images than zoom lenses.  Street photography requires fast reactions and fast shooting, so ensure that your shutter speed setting is fast enough to capture clear shots when there is movement.  To keep your photos interesting, try a slow shutter speed on the street and capture movement.  Blurred vehicles or people running by can be just as intriguing as a subject in focus, similar to the picture above.

2) "Steal" the moment

Watch people as they proceed through their day.  Catch photos of people by anticipating when a moment will happen, for example, the moment a couple is about to kiss.  Stand in a high traffic foot area and wait for a moment to happen rather than search the streets for it.  Also, try to blend in with the crowd, so the moment is not interrupted because someone caught you taking a picture of them.  They excitement of this type of photography is capturing the moment without the person you are taking the picture of does not know that you exist.  It is more about being inconspicuous than socializing with people.  However, it is likely that the person will notice you taking their picture.

3) Confidence is key

Confidence is essential amongst every type of photography, especially street photography.  Do not be afraid when an individual, who's picture you just took, confronts you about it.  People scold street photographers quite often, but this is all a part of the experience.  Be polite and explain yourself.  Apologize if this person feels offended that you took their photograph without their permission by offering to email the photo to them.  It takes a bit of practice to become comfortable with this style of photography, but the results are certainly worth it.

Remember to search for particularly interesting subjects and focus on the story.  Trying to photograph every stranger you come across will distract you and you will fail to notice something that is truly worth your attention.  Also, search for a compelling background and attractive light to emphasize the subject, isolating them from the rest of the world.
