This photo has a rather simple story. We were out on a drive up Island Park way. We went into a less populated area to check out the photo opportunities. This was some off-road section of the Targhee National Forest there. It was a bumpy ride.
After seeing some deer off to the side of the road making a quick exit, I decided that I wanted my camera up front with me on the off chance that something like that would happen again. No more deer shots presented themselves but there were other opportunities for me instead.
I was looking out the window at a large Cloud Formation for a couple of minutes or so. It reminded me a bit of a tornado without actually being a dangerous weather situation. I decided that I wanted to take a picture of it so I was glad to have my camera so easily available.
I knew that the trees in front of me carried little visual interest thanks to the overpoweringly bright sunlight from above. The shot still needed some element to ground it or else it would remain a simple photo of the clouds with no reference point at all. I decided that the trees were a necessary element to include in the framing of this photograph.
Once that decision was quickly made, I also knew that I didn't need anything but an outline in order to achieve the look I was going for with the cloud. A silhouette of the forest in front of me was just the ticket to completing this shot.
I took a rare instance of not getting out of the car to use my tripod with this shot. I didn't feel like risking that the cloud would blow away or something, besides, we had places to be soon. I took this shot from a moving car with the window down so I didn't get the window spots in the shot. This kind of clear and sharp photo is difficult to get when you are moving.
