Whistler Elopement – Shannon and Ross

Shannon and Ross are from Connecticut and came out to Whistler for a low key Whistler elopement at the top of Whistler mountain by the giant inukshuk behind the Roundhouse. The inukshuk is becoming the most popular wedding location this year, I’ve already done three weddings there in 2014, and I have another three coming up in the next week.

Shannon had a great, old school wedding veil, and I thought it made for a cool looking wedding detail. About half way through the day, it blew off her head and the last we saw of it, it was sailing off toward shale slope.

I stopped by to get some extra photos before they went for dinner at the Bearfoot Bistro. This is the fire place in the lobby of the Westin Resort.

The Bearfoot Bistro has an incredible wince cellar that makes for stunning photos. I live in fear of knocking one of these bottles off the wall.

Tech Stuff
For shooting after dark, you really need to be on the ball with your off Camera flash. For the shot in front of the Fire Place, I initially lit it with a Nikon SB-900 mounted in a soft box off to the left of the camera. It still looked really dark, so I put another flash off to the right of the camera, literally sitting on a bench by the fireplace. It’s what’s called a kicker, and it’s there to produce some rim lighting and highlighting to separate the subjects from the back ground.

This is the shot before I put the kicker in. Way too dark on the right side.

My 70-200mm lens froze solid in the -25 weather on the last wedding on Whistler mountain, so I’ve been using my old 85mm f/1.8 lens while the 70-200 gets repaired. It’s not as convenient as the 70-200, but it’s a wickedly sharp lens. Not bad for piece of gear I’ve owned for over 21 years.

Cameras: Nikon D3 x 2
Lenses: Nikon AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8, Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon AF 85mm f/1.8
Lighting: Nikon SB-900 flash, SU-800 controller, and a small softbox on a light stand.
