Nature Adventure: Seasonal Water Dipping Of the Birds..

A pair of White rumped Munia (Lonchura striata)

An Olive Winged Bulbul ( Pycnonotus plumosus) arriving at the Pool..
A Baya Weaver (Ploceus philippinus) without the usual flock..
A Jungle Myna taking a drink..

Slaty Breasted Rail, (Rallus striatus).
Living in the northern part of Malaysia, there are two major seasons that occur here, the dry season and the wet season. When the former is over, the first day of rain will create small pools or puddles on the ground. This is when almost all birds will take a dip in the pools due to the prolonged state of dryness. For me, this will be an exciting event to observe and photograph.

Yellow Vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus golavier).
First you have to locate a hiding place that will be near the pool and a proper working distance for your equipments. Make sure you have some food and water for your convenience. Avoid making any startling noise and best not to use flash if possible. Also, do not wear any bright clothing.

Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis).

This will be fun as you will get varieties of birds in one place. But they will not be sharing the pool together. Instead, a flock will chase away another flock. A bigger bird will chase the smaller ones away. And the cycle will just go on, providing you with varieties of birds and the convenience of not having to change location.

Plain-backed Sparrow ( Passer flaveolus ).

This activity will go on for 3 or 4 days, if not interrupted. When water is already abundant everywhere, this will be the end of the event. This happens only once a year and you have to be alert to changes in the weather as not to miss this event.
