I’ve expressed my fondness for working with the human form in previous posts (here, here, and here).  All of that said, I think it is important to note that these sessions are important to me/my work for a variety of reasons.

First, almost all of this kind of imagery that I do takes place in the same location, which encourages me to stretch my creativity, but also gives me the opportunity to retry poses.  In a sense, this is very similar to what sketching the nude form meant to my paintings; they allowed me to experiment.

Second, these Figure Sessions let me be free in my work, and to actually enjoy the act of making photographs.  A lot of my professional work centers on portraiture, and so many times there are constraints on the assignment that ruin the creativity of it for me.  For clients, you are always considering what they want instead of exploring the relationship between you and the sitter or the formal possibilities and expressiveness of the person in front of you; figure sessions let me do just the opposite.

Katherine is a painter herself, so it was wonderful working with her on this image set.  Even though it was Kat’s first time modeling, she caught on quickly, and I look forward to following up on these with her soon.
