Facebook-owned Whatsapp has added a new feature called the WhatsApp Pay. As the name clearly suggests, it lets you make payments right through WhatsApp messaging app. Will this latest feature make other online Payment apps obsolete?

Time will tell.

The payments feature has been under testing for Indian users for almost an year.

WhatsApp is now going live with the payments feature using UPI, said the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said in a statement.

“People can safely send money to a family member or share the cost of goods from a distance without having to exchange cash in person or going to a local ba”, said”, WhatsApp.

Making payments is now literally as easy as sending a text!

How to use WhatsApp Pay

First of all, you need to have a bank account and a debit card in the country in which you’re using the app.

WhatsApp will send instructions to banks, which will then carry out the transaction using UPI.

1. Setup your UPI

Click on the three dots on the top-right corner of your WhatsApp screen, you will see a new payment option.

You’ll be redirected to a page on which you can add a payment method. And a new payment button on the bottom-right corner.

When you click on it, the app will show you a list of banks supported.

Select your bank from the list. After this, you number will be verified using SMS. Your bank account should be linked to the number you use for WhatsApp.

After the verification is complete, the bank account linked to your number will automatically show up and you can set it up for UPI payments.

2. Send payments

Open the WhatsApp chat of the person to whom you have to pay.

Click on the attach icon and tap on payment.

If the person doesn’t have UPI payments enabled on their account, you will see an option to notify them about it.
