How Does A Password Manager Work And Why You Need One

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We use passwords every day. For social media logins, emails and for signing up in various mobile apps. Remembering passwords for all of them is bound to get difficult.

Sometimes you might even compromise with a less secure password so that you can remember it easily.

That’s when a Password Manager comes into the picture.

Consumer Reports just tested some and reveals which ones will keep you and your accounts secure.

There are online hackers all over the Internet. With an easy password, their job would be reduced to half. All of your passwords need to be unique and tough to crack.

That’s why Consumer Reports tests and rates password managers — apps and online services that do all the heavy lifting for you.

What consumer reports focus on

In their testing, Consumer Reports focuses on three main factors: security, privacy and usability. CR says that security means how resistant the product is to hacking attempts.

Privacy is the information collected by the password manager, with whom is it shared and what is it used for. Usability means to what extent does the password manager share the password on other platforms.

Remember only ONE password for your Password Manager

Why use a password manager? Because then you will have to remember only one password. And that is the password of your password manager. Your manager will automatically fill in passwords for you for all the different places where you log in each day.

Consumer Report’s tests said that 1Password is the best option available right now. It was the only password manager that scored excellent rating in all the three categories security, privacy and usability.

The best alternate option which is free to use, is Bitwarden, as recommended by Consumer Reports.

About 1Password

To access your 1Password account, you need to enter master password plus a secret key. This provides you with an additional layer of protection.

The secret key is a code made up of 34 letters and numbers. It is unique to your account.

1Password says it has never been hacked. It can be run as browser extensions on Windows (Chrome, Firefox, Edge/Edge Legacy, and Opera), Mac (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera) and Linux (Chrome, Firefox, and Opera). Standalone apps are available for Mac, Android, and iPhone/iPad.
