Instagram has announced Instagram Threads App. It is a messaging app designed to message with your close friends.

By using Instagram Threads, you can easily text, send photos and videos to the people you have added in your ‘close friends’ list.

On opening the app, the first screen is a camera

The app has three key highlights. First is the default screen which is the camera.

On opening the app, you will see the camera open first. Something new, but is it useful?

Unlike Instagram, this camera doesn’t come with any filters, it is just a basic camera option.

You can customize shortcuts for the friends with whom you interact the most. Their profile picture will appear on the bottom right of the default screen of the app.

This way, you can open the app, take a picture and tap on their profile picture to send it to them.

Your inbox

The inbox in the Instagram Threads App is the same as your direct messages inbox on Instagram.

The only difference is that this will have messages from your close friends only. Which is quite obvious because the app itself is made for close friends.

Status Screen in Instagram Threads

To post a status, you can either pick an emoji and type a few words or use the available formatted statuses provided in the app itself.

You have to tell the app how long it should keep the status visible. The time duration can vary between one to four hours.

Here’s something interesting. There is an option to opt in to ‘auto status’.

What auto status does is that it refreshes on its own as you go on about your day. It will know when you’re at home or at work.

Instagram says that it doesn’t store your exact location and just uses the information to create context.

The company has said the following regarding the privacy concerns with the auto status option,

Threads will request your location, movement, battery level and network connection from your phone in order to determine what context to share. For example, Auto Status might use your precise location to show your friends that you’re “ At a cafe.” Or Auto Status might detect that you’re biking and set your status to “ On the Move.” Before this is enabled, you’ll be told what information Auto Status is requesting and will be asked to specifically agree. Auto Status will not share your precise location with your friends, and when Threads sends location information to our server to look up locations, it’s not stored there – this information is only stored on your device for a limited time. It is also deleted if you remove Threads.

The introduction of Threads will help separate the influencer audience from close friends on the platform.

One side of the app can be for fashion, fitness and all kinds of influencing while the other can be a more personal version meant for closest friends.
