iOS 13 has been officially launched with a set of new updates to the system. The much-awaited dark mode is here along with an updated Photos App and Apple Maps.

  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6S
  • iPhone 6S Plus

The latest iOS version is now catered to only iPhones as the iPad will now have their own iPadOS. This means that iOS 13 is Apple’s view of what an OS should be like for smartphones only.

Apple has worked on improving its own apps and providing better privacy controls to its users. The dark mode is coded into the system itself, this removes the need for individual apps to have a dark theme in themselves.

With the new and enhanced Apple Maps, it is challenging Google Maps for navigation. Better Maps was also needed to use iOS 13 to the best of its abilities.

iOS 13 isn’t the finished product, Apple confirmed

It has been practically admitted by Apple that 13.0 isn’t the finished product iOS 13.1 is already scheduled to release just a few days after the release of 13.1.

13.1 version should bring some of the other features that were announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference into iOS 13 and patch some of the bugs. There are updates lined up for this fall which will introduce AirPod audio sharing support and HomeKit video cameras.

Let us take a closer look at what updates we’re getting with the iOS 13.

List of updates in iOS 13

Dark Mode is really pitch black

The background is pitch black which looks quite great on the OLED screens of iPhone X or XS device. The dark mode was released for Android as well but it wasn’t released for most its Apps.

Apple has introduced the dark theme in all of its major Apps with the release of 13.0. It is an all-black theme and doesn’t look like a darker gray color.

New Photos App

The Photos App got two major updates. The new design makes it easier to look through the years of stored photos. The editing tools have been upgraded for editing both pictures and videos. Looks like third-party apps won’t be needed at all.

The view that shows all of your photos has been simplified for practical use. You’ll no longer see numerous tiny thumbnails of pictures. Everything works sequentially now.

Select a given year in the year tab, and you’ll get right to the month tab at that exact location. Tap in on the month you want, and you’ll flip to the curated “days” mode, which selects the best pictures and videos. Tap in on days, and you’ll head to a view of every single picture taken on that date (including duplicate shots and screenshots). The whole thing is super fast and time-saving, even when jumping back years.

New editing tools are a lot like Instagram

Photos App has editing tools very similar to Instagram. You have to tap on a picture to edit it and you’ll get a list of different adjustments like exposure, highlights, shadows and more.

To see the before and after, you have to tap on the image preview. There is also a toggle to see how your editing has affected the photo.

Undoubtedly, these tools are pretty basic and are in no way comparable to apps like Lightroom mobile. It is good enough to tweak a picture before sending it to your friend but probably not for photography shots.

Video editing has been introduced for the first time. It doesn’t provide many tools but you have all the basics that you would need.

You can crop and rotate videos, this was not possible in the previous versions of the Photos App.

Apple Maps Update

Apple is working hard on raising the level of Apple Maps up to Google Maps. Apple Maps has a new street view feature that lets you look around places anywhere on the globe. Although it is not close to Google’s version, the change is worth noticing.

The company has a new standard for its base maps that are more precise and have more in-depth data about the roads, buildings, etc. It is yet to reach a state where it will be available worldwide.

Better Privacy Controls

The location features have been updated in such a way so as to prevent companies from tracking the users through their iPhones. This was done by introducing the new permissions settings.

It also makes it simpler to find your lost devices or keep a check on friends and family for their safety.

The permission settings in the iOS 13 let you decide if you want the app to get your information once or only when the app is open and in use.

If any app tries to access your data while it is in the background, you will be notified instantly.
