How To Add Sky And Colors To a Boring Picture: Snapseed Tutorial

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There are many third-party apps which have skies as their filters and you can apply them on any of your pictures. But the problem with them is that they don’t blend in properly.

You don’t get many tools to customize the sky you add. I’ll be sharing a much flexible way to add, blend the sky to your pictures.

We will also create a better picture by doing some basic changes in the Snapseed app.

If you don’t have the app installed on your phone, you can download it from the links mentioned below,

Snapseed for iOS

Snapseed for Android

How to add sky and colors to a boring picture

Select a picture of the sky

I would suggest looking for high-quality pictures of the sky on sites like unsplash, pexels, pixabay, etc. You can find pictures in a Google search too but they might not be of the best quality.

Now that you have got your sky ready, let’s move on to the next step.

Open the picture in Snapseed

Open your photo in Snapseed and go to Tools. In the tools, you will find the Double Exposure option. Click on it and you will be redirected to your phone’s gallery to select a picture.

Select double exposure from the tools

Use Double Exposure Tool

In this step, you have to select the picture of the sky that you want to add. After selecting it, you have to change the blend mode to overlay.

Change the blend mode to subtract

While placing the sky image over your picture in this step, adjust it by moving it around so that the horizon is the same as the original picture. When you are done with the placement, hit okay and apply.

Do not worry if your sky gets applied to the parts of your picture where you do not want it. We will fix that in the next step.

Refine your sky

In order to refine your edit, click on the layer icon on the top-right of your screen. Go to view edits. Select the double exposure and click on the brush icon.

With this brush, you can paint over the areas where you want the sky to show up.

While painting on the picture, you can zoom in to have a closer look at the outlines. The size of the brush will get adjusted automatically. The brush becomes smaller as you zoom in and bigger as you zoom out.

For the final touches

To blend the sky and your picture, as a final step, we will do one task. Go to grainy film option and select a filter of your choice.

As this gets applied to the entire picture, both the pictures will now look more alike as they will have the same color tones.

Here is the final result
