With the ever-growing population in India, the labor has been becoming cheaper since day 1. There are many issues that have grown from it and one of the news ones is as inhumane as it can get.

Periods are a taboo in India and after years of development and numerous accomplishments that the country has made, the taboo still remains.

Women are still titled as ‘unpure’ while they’re going through something that is one of the most naturally occurring things and in fact, the reason why you exist. I can go on about the things we women have been facing, beginning from the smallest restriction of not entering a temple but we have heard that a million times.

Today, I want to talk about that is something new and almost impossible to believe at first.

What is happening exactly and where?

The Sugar Belt in Maharashtra has been seeing an influx of migrants from the neighboring places because of the availability of work.

The region is ‘Beed’ and is a region where sugarcane is harvested. The working conditions are dreadful as there are long working hours, fewer breaks and sore penalties.

As read in the report by BBC, a large section of women is willingly getting their Uterus Removed by undergoing through the process of hysterectomy.

Women get uterus removed under work pressure

Because they aren’t aware of the consequences. What they know is, no uterus = no leaves = not get fired from your job.

As you can guess the rural women are deceived by the doctors. These doctors don’t explain what exactly is going to happen.

And as we know, word of mouth is the best kind of marketing method. One woman fell for the idea and it has spread through the region. Doctors have been taking advantage of this by suggesting procedures that aren’t even needed in the first place.

Sadly, it is becoming common for the women of the village to get their uterus removed. They do so after having children so that they can carry on with their jobs. This enables them to provide for their family without taking any days off from work.

Female workers in the sugar belt are encouraged to go ‘wombless’

It is a win-win for everyone. Doctors get their pockets filled and the employers get labor that needs no leaves every month.

As the labor is so cheap and work is hard to find, the women fall in the trap like a bee to a jar of honey.

The consequences of the hysterectomies include continuous dizziness, swellings, and critical headaches.

While the city advances, the villages are going on a journey backward.
