Twenty street dogs were shot dead by an unidentified individual in Ponnakal village, Mahbubnagar district. The incident occurred between 1:30 and 2:30 in the morning. Police are compiling the accused’s personal information. Addakal Police Station has a case registered.

The incident came to light on Friday morning when residents of Ponnakal village reported to the police that they had discovered 20 dead stray dogs and five injured dogs on the village streets.

After a complaint was filed at the Addakal Police Station by a Panchayat official, the cop said the case was registered under section 429 of the Indian penal code. This section deals with killing animals apart from other relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Arms Act.

According to M. Ramakrishna, inspector at Bhootpur Police, the dogs were killed by bullets and not pellets. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect came in a car and fired at the dogs from close range around 1.30 am to 2.30 am. The post-mortem report is still awaited.

Five other dogs somehow survived the shooting rampage miraculously according to the police. The carcass of dead dogs was found lying all over the shooting place, and the police could not tell what was the motive of the suspect.

He said there was an investigation under progress to find the offenders. Based on preliminary inquiry, the official stated that an eyewitness reported that one individual who arrived in a car was the one who did the crime.

The residents said that shortly after midnight, a few individuals in masks entered the car and started shooting the dogs. The tragedy claimed the lives of about twenty to twenty-five dogs, while several more were hurt. Adulapuram Goutham, an activist with the Stray Animal Foundation of India, was quoted by ANI as saying, “We have filed a complaint to the police officials in this incident.”
