The End of Wild Horses

Tags: horse

I think we can all agree this blog does not exactly dwell on the most serious of issues. Let’s face it, serious issues aren’t fun. Today, however, I’m going to temporarily put the humor aside as an extremely important issue is currently sending ripples into the Horse world of the United States.

For many years now, horse slaughter has been banned in the US. Now, I’ll admit, this doesn’t mean American horses don’t get slaughtered. They are still occasionally shipped over borders to be killed off in another country and sold for meat; the ban, however, makes it harder and less financially rewarding.

Now, for the first time in years, the welfare of the animals we love so much is on the line as a dangerous bill makes its way through congress. The bill will not only open slaughter committees throughout the US; it also contains a horrifying provision which will allow for the massacre of the thousands of wild horses and burros being kept unjustly in holding facilities.

These wild horses have been rounded up over the years by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to fix an alleged overpopulation of wild horses. Meanwhile, the dwindling wild horse population takes up mere scraps of the millions of acres managed by the BLM, while the cattle are given the hundreds of millions of acres remaining.

The wild horses that have been rounded up have then been kept in overcrowded government holding pens, in which they are separated from their families and treated like dirt. Now the government wants to take it even further with this bill, which would result in the inevitable slaughter of our country’s wild horses. The end is near for these beautiful landmarks of America. BUT IT IS NOT TOO LATE.

If you are a horse lover—as I’m sure you must be if you have a) read this far and b) visited this blog in the first place—please take action. There are ways to make your voice heard. Visit the website of the ‘American Wild Horse Campaign.’ Click on ‘Take Action’ and follow their directions. IT WILL ONLY TAKE MINUTES. Imagine that: a few minutes of your time could help save the lives of thousands and thousands of innocent animals. I’m begging you to join in this fight. It may be a dying fight. But it is not dead.

Thank you for your time, and I apologize for the gloom and doom!
