Dog carriers: For luxury or necessity?

While the word “pet carrier” may conjure up images of spoiling pet owners sporting a small puppy in a designer bag or in a baby stroller for the sake of spoiling and luxury, pet carriers also serve many other functional means; they are an optional and sometimes a requirement for travel, and some crates can act like a ‘den’ and are a great way to train your dog.  While some breeds have endless energy and can run “forever”, there are certain breeds, like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who may have health issues, like weak hearts, or simply tire fast. Keeping a pet carrier on hand may make sense if you plan on long strenuous exercise that your pet may not be able to endure til the end.

What type of pet carrier is right for your dog?

An ideal pet carrier for your dog depends on his/her personality.  Dogs each have their own personalities, especially depending on breed.  Some like laying on a cool surface, while others like soft, cushioned pillows.  Some like to chew, some our wild and frisky, while others are very laid back.

Hard-Sided Carriers

For dogs who are afraid of carriers, this Petmate Two Door Top Load Pet Kennel allows you to lower your pet in from the top, allowing them to feel more at ease.  If your dog likes to chew, since it’s made of hard plastic, it makes it difficult to bite through.  You can also open the top to give your pet a break while not having to completely remove them from the carrier.

Soft-Sided Carriers

For dogs who like a soft, comfortable carrier, the OxGord Soft-Sided Pet Carrier and the Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier provide sturdy yet soft comfort for your pet.  A sherpa bed lays inside, making travel comfortable, and mesh windows allows your pet ventilation and a window to the outside.

Getting your pet to feel at home

Some dogs may not be used to staying in a pet carrier, but if you provide toys, treats and scents they are familiar with, they may become more at ease to enjoy their stay.

This video  shows some great ways on making your pet feel more at home in their carrier or crate.
